Beware when shopping online

Shopping online is something we do so because of the convenience, the price, and the wide variety of suppliers and products especially as we are now heading towards the busiest time of the year when it comes to online shopping. Black Friday and Cyber Monday will soon be upon us and after that Christmas resulting in millions of people worldwide shopping looking for bargains.

When shopping for bargains we can be so eager at times that we fail to spot scams resulting in payment fraud, our personal details being harvested and also counterfeit goods being purchased. The most common scam is fake websites that masquerade as websites we know and trust or as agents of products that we like. Nespresso capsules are big sellers and counterfeit versions of them are easy to sell online because they will be priced at a price that is too good to be true.

Human nature also dictates that we are liable to buy first and ask questions later and when shopping online we can’t physically see what we are buying so always remember:

  • If it looks too good to be true it probably is.
  • If you are shopping in a shop you will find it a lot easier to spot the bad products and talk to a person who can answer any queries that you may have.
  • When shopping online you can’t physically see what you are buying.
  • If we can’t see what we are buying then we should be making sure that what we are buying is genuine and that the supplier is 100% trustworthy.
  • Never buy the first thing you see online and make sure that that the supplier or website you are buying from is genuine.
  • Always look for online reviews of the products you wish to purchase as well as the supplier or website.
  • Be very wary of reviews that are gushing in praise and which may also bad mouth competitors as they are nearly always written by who you are looking to buy from.
